Last year, Juliana (2) started jumping out of her crib and Olivia (4) was outgrowing her transitional toddler crib. Let’s just say, both girls were due for a major upgrade! So when I started designing their new big girl room, finding a bed that worked for both their ages was my top priority.

And the Ikea Minnen Bed was the bed we ended up buying!

While doing my search, I looked at several different designs and styles of twin beds. But my heart kept leading me back to Ikea’s Minnen Bed. I mean, you honestly can’t beat the price of $99 and the overall cute and simple design. It can pair with any style of furniture and is both functional and adorable.

So of course, I did major research before committing and purchasing it. Because ya know, I have grown up to be a more reasonable and not so impulsive buyer #momlife.

Why It’s The Perfect Toddler Bed

There are a few key reasons why I love this bed and why I think it’s perfect for your growing toddler:

• It is extendable and can be adjusted to grow with your child.
• It is affordable. $99 for a twin bed that is super cute is a great deal!
• It is lower to the ground, making it safer and easier for small children to climb in and out of bed.
• The cutely designed railings on the top and foot of the bed, help keep your child from falling out.
• It’s simple, modern design makes it easy to fit into any bedroom style.

As you can see in the picture above, my two year old can climb in and out easily. She doesn’t have to “hop” or “jump” up to get in. As a mom, I am sure the last thing you want to worry about is your child falling when climbing into bed (at least that was my concern)!

What type Of Mattress Does It use?

Ikea makes a separately sold extendable mattress made specifically for the Minnen Extendable Bed. Here are a few different options that they sell:

• PLUTTEN Foam Mattress for Extendable Bed $55
• VIMSIG Foam Mattress for Extendable Bed $75
• INNERLIG Spring Mattress for Extendable Bed $100

You can also use a regular twin size mattress

For my girls, I decided to extend the bed frame to the full twin size length. One of my mom friends who owns the bed told me she wished she had done this. That way you don’t need to keep messing with the bed over the years.

And since I went that route, we bought a regular twin mattress for the bed frame. Plus my 4-year-old is pretty tall and I didn’t want two different size beds in the room (I like symmetry haha). But of course, it’s up to you and what works with you and your child!

You have either option, which is pretty sweet.

The mattress I bought is also on the thinner side and is only 5″ high, so it doesn’t create too much height above the frame. When it first arrived, I was worried it was too thin and not comfy enough, but after laying on it myself and having my girls sleep in the beds, it’s really comfortable! It’s an affordable price and the girls sleep great at night. We love it!

Putting The Ikea Minnen Bed Together

Putting this bed together is actually pretty darn easy. My husband and I put it together in about 15 mins and it was very straightforward! Unfortunately, the pictures I took of us building it are nowhere to be found (argh!).

But just know, it’s super simple and quick to build!
